Why Knowing Your Numbers Matters More Than You Think
Most people walk into their first retirement planning meeting with a folder of statements, a rough idea of what they own, and a vague sense of what they spend. They leave with more questions than answers — not because the conversation wasn't valuable, but because the conversation couldn't go where it needed to go without the right information on the table.
This is one of the most common things we see at Retirement Resources, Inc. And it's why we built MyCompass.
The Real Reason People Delay Retirement Planning
There's a quiet truth about retirement planning that doesn't get said often enough: most people who put it off aren't lazy, disorganized, or in denial. They're overwhelmed.
Retirement planning isn't one decision. It's hundreds of small ones, layered on top of each other:
- How much do you actually spend in a month — and how will that change in retirement?
- When should you claim Social Security, and what does the difference between claiming at 62, 67, and 70 actually mean in dollars?
- What do you own, and where is it — accounts, real estate, insurance policies, business interests?
- How much debt do you carry, and on what timelines?
- Is your life insurance enough? Too much? Still relevant?
- What's your tax picture, and what changes as your income shifts?
These aren't questions you can answer in a sit-down meeting. They require pulling statements, finding old policy documents, checking SSA benefit estimates, and adding up monthly expenses you may not have totaled in years.
The result? Many people quietly put off the planning conversation because they don't feel "ready" for it. Ready meaning prepared. Ready meaning organized. Ready meaning they know their numbers.
That's the problem MyCompass was designed to solve.
What MyCompass Actually Is...
MyCompass is our branded digital planning portal. It's a secure online tool where you can organize your complete financial picture — income, expenses, assets, debts, insurance, retirement projections, and estate documents — at your own pace, on your own time.
It's not a robo-advisor. It doesn't make investment decisions or generate financial advice. It's an organizational tool — a structured way to gather everything in one place, so that when you sit down with your advisor, the conversation can immediately go to the questions that matter most: *Where do I stand? What are my options? What should I do next?*
Think of it this way: a doctor can give you a much better appointment when they have your blood work in front of them before you walk in. A retirement planning meeting works the same way. The better the inputs, the more valuable the conversation.
What You Can Track Inside MyCompass
The portal walks you through the same categories we'd cover in a comprehensive planning review:
- Goals & Profile — what matters most, what you're working toward
- Income — current paychecks, expected Social Security, pensions, investment income, rental income
- Expenses — a detailed monthly budget across housing, daily living, transportation, subscriptions, and savings
- Assets — retirement accounts, real estate, business interests, and insurance policies
- Debts — balances, interest rates, and payoff timelines
- Social Security — estimated monthly benefits at different claim ages
- Life Insurance Needs Analysis — coverage compared to actual need
- Tax Profile — where you fall in current brackets
- Retirement Projections — whether you're on track based on current assumptions
- Retirement Budget — projected monthly spending after you stop working
- Estate Planning — documents in place, beneficiaries, succession plans
You don't have to fill it all out at once. You don't have to fill it out perfectly. You can update it as life changes — a new job, a paid-off mortgage, a grandchild, a move. The portal is yours, securely, for as long as you're a client.
Why This Approach Works
When clients come to a meeting with their MyCompass data complete, three things happen:
- The conversation goes deeper, faster.** Instead of spending the first 45 minutes building a picture, we can spend the entire meeting interpreting it — talking about what the numbers actually mean for your life, your goals, and your decisions ahead.
- You see your own financial picture clearly — often for the first time.** Many clients tell us the act of completing MyCompass was its own breakthrough. Watching the totals come together, seeing where your money actually goes, and getting a real sense of your net worth tends to change the way you think about decisions long before any planning advice gets offered.
- Annual reviews become more useful. Life changes. Income changes. Goals shift. Because MyCompass updates with you, every review meeting starts with current data rather than catching up on what's happened since last year.
Who MyCompass Is For
We built MyCompass with two groups in mind:
Existing clients who want to get the most out of every planning conversation, stay organized between meetings, and have a single source of truth for their financial life.
Prospective clients who want to understand where they stand before deciding whether to work with a financial advisor — ours or anyone else's. There's no cost or obligation to start using the portal, and the organizational work you do inside it belongs to you regardless of where you end up.
